There aren't many charitable endeavors that would make my wife say, "What? Why?" When I told her about becoming involved in them, but I found one. This month, I am joining the Movember movement. "What is this 'Movember' you speak of?", you might be asking yourself. Well, let me tell you.
Movember is a movement that started in Australia, where men deface their faces by growing mustaches to show their support for men's health issues. Participants are challenged to start off the month of November clean shaven and spend the entire month growing a 'stache. This is our version of the ubiquitous ribbons that people have sported for various causes. When I read about my friend Josh Sweeney's participation on his Wine(Explored) blog, I knew I had to jump in.
So what does any of this have to do with wine? I have decided that I want to incorporate another element to my month long fund raising endeavor. I'm still working out all of the details, but I do know that I will be pushing my Getting to Know You Tour into Washington State's Mourvèdre and Mourvèdre-based wines. So now it is Mourvèdre Movember for me. I'm hoping that I can come up with some fun projects with some of the local wineries in support of men's health.
So what can you do to help?
Make a Donation -
My wife will kill me if this mustache doesn't raise money to help this cause, so you know that your donation will save at least one male life. Your donations will go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation and to Lance Armstrong's LIVESTRONG foundation. To donate, visit my Mo Space page here and make an online donation. Also feel free to email me if you are interested in making a fund matching donation, or have other ideas of ways you can help with this fund raising effort.
Host an Event -
One of the other ways that people can help out is by hosting a Movember event. Given my focus on this blog, I would like to stage a wine related Movember event, possibly at a winery somewhere here in Eastern Washington, and even cooler if it's a winery that produces a Mourvèdre. I am open to tossing around some ideas about what all we would do to raise money for this charitable endeavor. Contact me if you are interested in hosting something.
Join in Mourvèdre Movember (for wineries) -
I am going to be visiting with wineries who make a Mourvèdre wine throughout the month. If you are a winery and would like to participate, please contact me. It would also be awesome if you are interested in offering to donate some of the proceeds of sales for the month to the cause. Contact Ben here.
So, for my wife's sake, and to save my life and the lives of countless other men, please donate here. I will be posting my mustache progress over the coming days, so you have that to look forward to.

You go! My wife, family and friends all rally together each year for both the Relay For Life and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events. Since 2003 we raised over $72,000 to fight cancer. Pick a battle, gear up and join the fight!!
As a wine blogger I also must say rock on and raise a glass
As a cancer survivor and a man I can humbly say thank you.
for everyone we a remembering and celebrating!!!

Love the extra step with Mourvedre Movember, dude. It’s good to see the passion for men’s health starting to spread, especially on the heels of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
All I have to say is… “Muy Macho!”
Great cause, my friend
Thanks Jason! That’s awesome that you guys raised so much money. I’m just hoping that I can do a little to help the cause. It’s also awesome that you are a cancer survivor, so I’ll raise a glass to you as well. Cheers!
I thought that the Mourvedre thing would be a fun wine tie-in. Hoping I can get some winery participation in this effort.
Thanks Ed. I’ve never had a ‘stache, so this should be interesting.
The tough part is deciding which style of ‘stache to rock!
All the best Ben!
I know, totally. I’ve been going back and forth between the standard Magnum PI ‘stache, and a little more Fu Manchu type action.
I love that this is for charity but I’m glad my fiance isn’t involved. It’ll be cool to see your progression, though. Good luck!
